Service Description

Duration: 4 Hours (4 sessions / 1 hour each) Who's it for: Parents, teachers, caregivers (children are welcome to attend) Please Note: This course is only offered in the online course format. What is Sign Language? Sign language uses hand gestures, facial expressions, and body movements to express words and phrases. It’s the primary language for most Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, though many of hearing people use it too. Teaching Sign Language to Children with Autism If your child with ASD struggles with speech, it’s important to access early intervention services. This will give them the best chance of achieving functional communication. That said, your speech therapist may decide that Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is the right option. Augmentative and Alternative Communication includes many different methods, from a picture exchange communication system (PEC), to flash cards, to sign language. With this course we want to help you guide your child on their journey to better communication. Research has shown that sign language may help children with autism develop speech. If not, it’s still a valid, useful tool for connecting with the people around them. We are glad you are pursuing opportunities to give your child the gift of a happy, fulfilled life through better communication. So where ever you are on this journey, we want to support you! Topics covered in this course will include: - Functional signs and - How to implement signing into daily life - A brief discussion on the benefits of learning sign language and - A focus on vocabulary that is important to your family. When prioritizing which signs to memorize, we focus on things that you and your child use most often. If you have any questions about the course, please don't hesitate to contact us.
